Transformers Animated: The Game (DS)

Transformers Animated: The Game gives fans of the animated series exactly what they want.
The game doesn’t do anything terribly different but it still quite fun to play.

In Transformers Animated: The Game, you’ll play as Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and Bulkhead. Each of these Autobots has different strengths and weaknesses. For example, Optimum Prime can grapple certain objects, Bumblebee has a special jumping ability, and Bulkhead can smash down specific walls. You’ll have to use the characters’ different strengths and weaknesses as you go through the levels since they’ll require the particular abilities of the Autobots. You can switch between them at will.

The game itself is a standard side-scroller where you’re going through the levels defeating enemies. It doesn’t revolutionize the genre in any way but the game is pretty light and the combination of being able to use different Autobots and challenging enemies makes the game fun to play. There is a segment where you’ll need to transform the characters, which actually feels a bit awkward to use and doesn’t flow with the rest of the game as well as it should but doesn’t really distract from the game as a whole.

Visually, the game is powered by A2M’s 3D side-scrolling engine. The engine holds up well with plenty of variety and good animation for the main characters. Generally, the presentation is heavily inspired by the animated series, which should please fans. Aurally, the game performs just as strongly. The soundtrack seems lifted if not inspired by the cartoon and works just as well in the game. There is plenty of voice acting from the cartoon’s cast, which sounds great, especially for a DS game.

Ultimately, Transformers Animated: The Game works by delivering classic platforming gameplay and getting the feel of the series down. Not everyone will like the direction of Transformers Animated, but fans of the series will definitely enjoy the game.
